DEPARTMENT OF ZOOLOGY PROFILE

The department of Zoology started in the year 1982 for the students those love nature & animal world. Our teaching is linked to our research expertise, and taught by experts on a wide range of animals from crustaceans and insects, through to fish, birds and mammals. Zoology graduates have a wide array of employment opportunities. These include positions in local, national and international industries, addressing issues that range from conservation and management of natural resources through to medical, veterinary or agricultural research. Opportunities also exist in research and education at universities and research institutes. Zoology also provides training in transferable skills, such as data analysis, project planning, critical thinking and written and spoken communication, which are useful in whatever career direction you choose. The staff of the department has participated in curricular, co-curricular, extracocurricular and research activity organized of by college and sponsored by University. The department has run basic & applied undergraduate courses. As  the  Head  of  the  Department  of  Zoology & staff,  we  share  as  much,  if  not  more,  the  enthusiasm  and  optimism of  our  students.  It  is  imperative  to  instill  in  our  students  a  culture  that  promotes  performance-oriented  endeavors.      The department has modern facilities for studying terrestrial insects, birds, fish and aquatic invertebrates and has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for analysis of biological materials and molecular genetics.

Brief History of Department Shri Shivaji Shilshan Prasarak Mandals Arts Science And Commerce College was established in 1978 by. The Science stream, RYK Science College was added in 1948. Science stream was started in 1982 when Zoology was one of the subjects at first year.

Mr. Hodshiyal S. S. M.Sc. B. Ed was appointed as Head, Department of Zoology from July 1982. He worked for one year. Then Mr. A. V. Panat, M. Sc., M. Phil. was appointed as Head, Department of Zoology from August 1983 & was continued on the same post till March 31, 2013. With the help of management Zoology subject along with other Science subjects received permanent affiliation from Maharashtra State government and also from University of Pune. After Retirement of, Mr. A. V. Panat, at present Dr. S.V. Chaudhari is working as HOD.

Objectives of the Department        1.            To provide basic and applied knowledge of life science.       2.            To create interest among students so as to motivate them for nature preservation.       3.            To expose students to the field of Life sciences through — field projects on Vermiculture, Biological control, environmental science, other basic and applied braches of Zoology. It will help to create awareness on environment friendly technologies.       4.            To motivate students for field research and laboratory research, research projects are assigned on the topic, which are very relevant to the subject. This will inculcate research aptitude in the students and they will be motivated to participate in research project competition like Avishkar.       5.            To motivate students to conduct seminars/workshops on the topics included in the curriculum. It will help in achieving academic excellence.       6.            We strictly observe the teaching schedule; timely conduct of examinations, preparing teaching plans and its execution, Departmental meetings of teaching and non-teaching staff.       7.            To promote students to create self-study material this will help the students to understand the subject more deeply and will help in boosting confidence and developing communication skill.       8.            To provide guidance for further study/post graduation in the subject. This will help them to find job opportunities. We always encourage and appreciate innovative teaching methods for effective subject communication. It helps in refinement of the academic programs for development of holistic approach in students.
